The Promotion of Plants and Wildlife
An Idea I had for Fangorn was to start a thing called The Promotion of Plants and Wild Life, basically this wouldn’t be something we did on the Internet so much but something we would do at home or in the community.
Plants
The more species of plants that exist in the world, the better it will be for ourselves and future generations. Farmers and crop breeders, for example, need large gene pools from which to produce disease resistant and high-yielding seeds to counter famine and feed the expanding world population.
Plant diversity is unevenly distributed across the world, so centers of high plant diversity "hotspots" need special attention.
Current threats & problems
The main threat to plant species is loss of habitat. This is partly due to a rapidly increasing human population which fells forests for timber and needs more land for agriculture and housing.
Another threat is the fact that tens of thousands of wild plants are harvested for trade each year without ensuring that enough are left to set seed. This trade is not just confined to rare and exotic species such as orchids, cacti, succulents, air plants, Venus fly-traps and medicinal plants, but also to spring bulbs such as cyclamen and snowdrops.
Plants and animals introduced by people from one region to another also create problems. They invade areas of natural vegetation, often at the expense of native species. Oceanic islands, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia have been particularly affected in this way. Climatic change also threatens plant conservation: many species will find it difficult to adapt to the effects of global warming.
What we can do?
Well our website is made up of people from several different countries, not really that I know where they are from but I have a tracking device that tells me what percent of members/visitors are from the USA, What percent from North America, and what percent from the rest of the world , so in conclusion everyone has a different Wildlife/Nature surrounding, so everyone would do something different. Really we are not asking you to go out and start a rally or something, but the main thing is just take nature into thought and don’t cause pollution, try to maybe plant two or three plants a season, if not a plant, a Tree! Its not like you have to go out and buy one either, just go into your backyard and pick up a seed or two that may have fallen off one of your trees and burry it an inch or so below the dirt and water it. Make sure it isn’t going to be in the way or come up in an inconvenient spot.
