RPG=role-playing game. RPing=role-playing. POV=point of view. NPC=non-player character. ^.^
What is RPing, anyway?
RPing (short for role-playing) is generally, in all the contexts the interaction of made-up story characters with each other and their surroundings. The manager or assistant managers will give general guidelines and events for you (the writer) to have your character or characters react to. In most RPGs (or role-playing games) that I've been in, you write your character's post from a third-person POV
So when does it end?
An RPG is rather like an ongoing story, with different events devised by the manager to give the characters new things to react to and interact with. The point is to keep the RPG going for as long as you can, though most tend to die out as members stop posting. I've known some that have gone for years and years, however, lets hope Halda Tindomë is the same!!!
Are there a lot of rules? *gulp*
Well...a lot of rules makes RP no fun! ^.^ However, I've always thought there should be general guidelines for each RPG board.
1) No sexually explicit posts (kissing hugging maybe a lead up to an intimite moment but that is it...dont go over the top), or a lot of strong language (again we dotn mind a little swearing, just dont take it too far), or extremely excessive posting in another language (like Elvish) without a provided translation. (you can place it as an OCC note at the bottom of your post ^.^)
2) A very important rule is the "No perfect characters" rule: Every character, like a real person, should have his or her flaws, and no character at all should be all-powerful. For instance, if you're going to make a graceful, slender, drop-dead-gorgeous maiden, she should have something like a seriously messed up past or a lot of issues.
3) In a fight, take your hits! We all know that even Tolkiens immoratal elves and Gods die, you cant always step out of your fights without harm (unless you have reason to do so, like previous planning)<<<ACTUALLY this rule is appiled more for chat than on the post boards< FON>
4) In this world (Lord of the Rings) Tolkien is god! If he says it didnt happen, then it didnt happen!
5) Keep to the time zone, as much as we would like to see Aragorn blast some Orcs with an Uzi, or a machine gun or Legolas hack into the Mordor database, it isnt going to happen. >.<
6) Keep your comments about God, to Eru- The God of Middle Earth, we dont want anything religious appearing in the roelplay.
7) !!IMPORTANT!!>>>No one can control other peoples' characters without permission. It's very annoying to get online and see that someone's taken your character out in the forest, for instance, when you might've had plans for having them meet with someone else in a tavern. It's even more annoying to get online and see that your character lost a fight with another person's character--but you weren't consulted about this decision first. This is called "power play", and it's not only rude but also unfair to the other writers.
8) This isnt really a rule, but it is polite to do. Anyway, I think we all do it there anyway. ^.^ If you want to make a quick note before or after you post, so that it doesnt cause confusion, you type OCC (out of character) then the message, then before going back into character you type IC (in Character). Another helpful hint is that if you are in a chat room and the host says BIC it means back in character
9) Another rule that also usually makes for more enjoyable RP is the rule that all posts must be more than a sentence or two long. This might seem like a harsh rule sometimes, but trust me, posts come out a whole lot better when you write too much rather than too little.
Just remember if you are using other people's characters in a long post, make sure you have their permission!
10)Ok and one more. Please, even if you have permission from the other member to use their character. DO NOT abuse that permission, a good thing to keep in mind is that, do not use other people's charries unless you are desperatly stuck and cannot move or do anything until the other member has said something or walked over there....
(ok if the member leaves the group, then do whatever the hell you want with the charries, or if they are grounded or cant get a computer for some reason and have told you that they dont mind what happenes to their character then that is ok)
11) Ok I lied, one more.o.O.... Managers and Assistant managers have final say in everything, Do not mess with us, lol. If they say that cant happen, it cant happen or they tell you to redo your post, listen to them. We are only trying to help, to get your character into the RPG, so it can fit into the plot twist later on (and wow there are alot of those here!!) Also we have final say over all NPC (non player characters)
